I think some people are intimidated or not interested in prayer. Maybe they think it’s complex or just not for them. I believe consistent daily prayer is vital to spiritual life or any life for for that manner. We must give God time to shape us. Time for Him to speak to us. Time for Him to minister to us and fill us with graces for our day ahead.
When my mom was young a priest told her to set a timer for 10 minutes a day and tell God , “ok God, you have ten minutes.”
She says at first that 10 mins seemed forever, then it went by so faster and faster she would find herself praying for longer after the timer went off.
That began her life of prayer. I can remember her my whole life in her “prayer” spot sitting and praying. Maybe saying the rosary or reading. But throughout the day she was praying.
She taught me this in college and I have pretty much done this since then for about 13 years. My prayer life has evolved and changed but the core has always stayed the same. When I wake up, coffee in hand I sit to be with God. Sometimes it would be for 10 mins, sometimes it’s with a nursing baby, sometimes it’s 45 mins. But it’s a part of my life that comes naturally now.
An Awesome author and speaker Mathew Kelly suggest almost identical way to begin prayer. He also says very holy people like Mother Theresa of Calcutta, and Saint John Paul 2 prayed for an hour each day. (His point was that those people are extremely “busy” and they still felt it vital to pray everyday.
I’m always struck in the Bible that Jesus, went to pray. But if Jesus even needed prayer time , we can guess that we should too.
So here are 3 simple steps to starting a Prayer life :
Simple step #1. Get a good kitchen timer.
Simple step #2. Make a small prayer basket or box.
Simple step #3. Sit down and literally say “ok God, here I am , You have 10mins”
Your life will transform …
here are a few notes about each step:
Timer – start off with an actual timer not an electronic one. I have bought many cheap ones and they break . Eww . just get on amazon right now and buy a kitchen timer.
Prayer Box or basket – put next to where you like to drink coffee or tea in the morning. Gather some books inside of it , religious things you have readily available. Maybe a spiritual book someone bought u , maybe a book or prayers , maybe a bible.
You also need a pen, small journal or notebook and a highlighter.

If reading the Bible is a struggle for you, you are not alone. My mom taught me this too. First start with a baby Bible, then move up to a preschool Bible, then a children’s bible and so forth. This will help you get familiar with the stories when you get to the real Bible.
Highlighter- don’t be scared of your Bible , highlight in it , write notes in it. Write prayer intentions in the inside cover. How beautiful is a well used Bible!
Just sit- some days you read
Some days you just sit and tell God about your day, whatever you feel called to.
The point is you are there. You can’t have a relationship with anyone if you don’t spend time together.
The Benedictine Monks have a word for spiritual reading, it’s basically means gnawing like a cow does on Grass. That’s how they say to read spiritual things. Stop when something touches you. Maybe re-read it. Close your eyes and try to get everything out of it that God wants to give you.
We don’t know what the day will bring us, if we wait to pray later in the day it may not happen. If we pray first thing in the morning, those graces are with us and no one can take that from us.
If you get a timer and prayer basket , post a picture of it in the comments of what your reading during prayertime.
